HELP RENOVATE COMPTON SOFTBALL FIELD - As part of the annual nationwide Cornell Cares Day, CCLA will join current Cornell students on winter break to help bring the Compton High School girls softball field up to code. Alumni and their families and friends are invited to help out in this important community service event, sponsored by the Cornell Public Service Center and Cornell Clubs around the country. Cornell Cares Day is now in its fifth year of organizing opportunities to help out locally while making friends in the community and networking with fellow Cornellians. We will work alongside the Compton High girls' varsity softball team to help them make their field the equal of the one the boys' team uses. Previously, the girls have had to make do with an ungroomed field, using bags for bases. We will do field maintenance, paint the backstop and create dugouts. Bring your glove and throw some balls. If there is interest, an impromptu game may be played afterward. Pizza will be served after we work, and all participants will get a T-shirt.. Time: 10 am to 1 pm. Location: Compton High School, 601 S Acacia Av, Compton. Field is back of school, at far west end. Directions: 91 East, left at Wilmington exit, right on Alondra, left on Oleander Parking: Enter at Oleander gate if open. If not, make first right, then first left into teacher parking lot. Marcie Houser at (310) 971- 3046.
Jan 9 "THE MERCHANT OF VENICE" AT MET THEATRE - Come see Shakespeare's timeless and ever-controversial "The Merchant of Venice" as you've never seen it before. The MET Theatre's new production, directed by Joseph Beck '99 and starring Leesa Beck '00, both Cornell Theatre alumni, is set in 1920s New York. This version, while true to Shakespeare's script, also depicts vaudeville, immigration, and the hurlyburly of Prohibition-era Gotham to complement the Bard's themes of usury and revenge, romance and impersonation. Wherever and whenever, (as Shakespeare wrote) "the quality of mercy is not strained." A wine-and-snack reception following the show will offer playgoers a chance to meet the actors. Time: 7 pm. Location: The MET Theatre, 1089 N. Oxford Av., Hollywood. Tickets: $15 Reservations: Call the theater at (323) 957 1152 (Please specify you are a Cornell alum when making your reservation.) Ellen Perlmutter at (310) 478-5460.

Mar 20 Prof. Isaac Kramnick to speak on the fuss over "GOD" in THE PLEDGE - Prof. Isaac Kramnick, one of Cornell's most beloved, knowledgeable & influential educators, never fails to engage and excite those who hear him speak. A 30-year faculty veteran, he formerly chaired the Government Dept and currently serves as Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. He won the Cornell Daily Sun's "Best Professor" award in 1996 and 2 years later was named a Weiss Presidential Fellow to recognize his inspiring teaching. One of Prof. Kramnick's duties as Vice-Provost is spearheading the Faculty Fellows and Faculty-in-Residence Programs in student housing. He will briefly update us on these initiatives. In his address to CCLA, he will discuss an issue made all the more urgent by 9/11: whether America's Pledge of Allegiance should contain the words "under God." In a case originating in Northern California, the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that the words should not be in the Pledge, sparking a national debate among politicians and citizens over the place of religion in our national life. The case, Elk Grove Unified School District v. Newdow, will be argued before the U.S. Supreme Court four days after Prof. Kramnick's address. Time: 11:30 am--luncheon to follow speaker. Apr 8 Johnson Club, Hotel Society & CEN-LA Present... HILTON'S STRATEGY for BEATING the INTERNET - What has the Internet done to hotel companies? It's brought on intense pricing pressures and moved hotel brands closer to being commodities. Third-party providers like Hotels.com and Expedia now buy hotel inventory in bulk, taking almost $1 billion from the industry-- more than 15% of the profit. Will the smartest players win, or will the industry be led by greed? The major players are "strategically complete," so it's now time to address this serious threat to profitability and brand integrity. Join industry veteran Dave Sherf, Hotel '67, Hilton Hotels' Sr.VP for real estate & asset management, in a lively, no-holds-barred presentation on the future of the lodging industry. Time: 6-9 pm. Includes buffet & cash bar.

Apr 25 PRESIDENT JEFFREY LEHMAN '77 VISITS L.A. - While a student, he lived in the U-Halls above the laundry room, which generated so much unwanted heat that he gave deep consideration to frying eggs on his floor. He was a serious table tennis competitor. A math major, he co-wrote a book called "1000 Ways to Win Monopoly Games." From these undergraduate beginnings, Jeffrey Lehman '77 went on to head the University of Michigan law school, where he crafted and successfully defended an affirmative action admissions policy. He returned to Ithaca last year to become President of Cornell. In his inaugural address last October he called for a renewal of Cornell's long-held free-thinking, inclusionist values and for strengthening the university's already substantial international involvement. Now CCLA is rolling out the Big Red Carpet to welcome President Lehman at a luncheon at the Jonathan Club (545 S. Figueroa St. in downtown Los Angeles) on Sunday, April 25, from noon to 2 pm. Cornellians and their guests will have a chance to engage personally this dynamic, fun-loving man of substance. Cost is $20. The university is mailing invitations to all Cornellians in the area. May 15 WHO NEEDS IFFY ITHACA WEATHER TO CELEBRATE SLOPE DAY? - It's been awhile since most of us last experienced a Slope Day, and a few of us have been a bit nostalgic for the celebration. In order to remedy this, we decided to organize a Slope Day L.A.-style. What better way to enjoy So Cal and the end of another school year than by sipping on margaritas, sampling tamales and meeting other Cornellians? Border Grill in Santa Monica boasts the best margaritas in town and offers amazing nachos, tortillas and other fun Cal-Mex dishes. Pitchers of margaritas and chicken quesadillas would have been great to have on that Slope, huh? See you there! WHERE: Border Grill; 1445 4th St., Santa Monica. TIME: 11:30 am. PARKING: Valet or at the Public Parking facility across the street. RSVP. Erin Flinn or Eduardo Porto Carreiro
June 3 Free Movie Preview!!! SUNDANCE FAVORITE "NAPOLEON DYNAMITE" - Fox Searchlight has made 30 seats available for Cornellians to see its new film, "Napoleon Dynamite," on June 3rd at 7:30 pm. "Napoleon Dynamite" is a hip, satirical high school comedy about a nerd in Idaho (the Gem State) who develops his skills to come out on top. This fresh little independent film was a favorite at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and won Best Feature Film at the 2004 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival. Newsweek, recognizing that "Napoleon Dynamite" doesn’t have much in common with dumb-cluck formulaic studio-made movies, predicts it will be this year’s summer sleeper. When the film opens June 11, it may make a star out of hero Jon Heder and create a nationwide trend to tight red ‘fros. Be the first on your block to see it! TIME: 7:30 pm (arrive around 7 to get through studio security; be sure to bring picture ID) PLACE: Little Theater, 20th Century Fox lot, 10201 West Pico Blvd. (at Motor) RSVP: email Will Casey and tell him you're with the Cornell group and he'll put your name on the list - only 30 seats available. Nancy Mills at (310) 545-3321.
June 16 YOUNG ALUMS TEST OUT THEIR SINGING SKILLS - After May's very successful Slope Day in LA event, we're hoping to continue the trend with a midweek karaoke night this month. Del's Saloon on Santa Monica Blvd. is one of the hidden treasures of the Westside. A small East Coast-ish dive bar, complete with pool tables and dart boards, Del's hosts a karaoke night every Wednesday that will allow all of us, regardless of singing voices, to belt out all the classics. So grab your friends and join us for a night of laughs and entertainment, no ear plugs necessary. WHERE: Del's Saloon, Santa Monica Blvd. just west of Bundy. TIME: 9:00 pm to ??. EAT, DRINK, PROVIDE SCHOLARSHIPS
How can you simultaneously have a wonderful meal, meet great new Cornellians and help provide a scholarship for deserving LA Cornell students? The Club’s annual series of Scholarship Dinners offers a chance for you to have a great night out while benefiting CCLA’s Scholarship Endowment. From late September nearly to Thanksgiving, generous Cornell hosts open their homes and tables--and in one case their boat--to other Cornellians. 100% of all donations go to the Endowment. As veteran attendees know, our Scholarship Dinners are a win-win-win deal for hosts, guests and the club. Many go to more than one Dinner; a few years ago one member attended six! In place since 1996, the CCLA Endowment is now nudging $100,000. We are currently funding two $4,000 scholarships a year. The club is continuing to grow the Endowment through our Scholarship Dinner program and other fund-raising. Your tax adviser can explain how some portion of your Dinner cost may be deductible. If your schedule prevents you from attending a Dinner this year, please consider making a donation in lieu of attending. We hope to see you around one of our convivial tables this fall.

Oct 3 CBAA-CCLA BOOK CLUB WILL READ "RICH DAD, POOR DAD" - As part of its ongoing series of discussions of books by authors of color, we present to all book-loving alumni "Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money--That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not!" by Robert T. Kiyosaki. The book is an effective tool for learning how to prioritize not only financial matters but life matters. Kiyosaki, a personal finance author and lecturer, developed his unique economic perspective from two very different influences--his two fathers. One father (Robert's real father) was a highly educated man, but fiscally poor. The other father was the father of Robert's best friend--the Dad who was an eighth grade dropout who became a self-made multi-millionaire. The lifelong monetary problems experienced by his "poor dad" pounded home the counterpoint communicated by his "rich dad." Time: 2-4 pm. Location/Parking: Pico-Robertson, park on street. Cost: BYOB (Buy Your Own Book). Pauline Bennett at (310) 297 5421.

"American Politics and the World" - THE 2004 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION: THE IMPACT HERE AND ABROAD: A weekend in LA with two of Cornell's very best, government professors Ted Lowi and Peter Katzenstein. Few Presidential contests in our lifetime have stirred the passionate interest aroused by the 2004 election. Most of us are following the campaign in the media, many of us contribute to a candidate, some volunteer for one side or the other, but few get personally involved. Watching the campaign unfold and assessing its impact here and abroad is the full-time business of Cornell Government Professors Ted Lowi and Peter Katzenstein, two of the most dynamic, knowledgeable and popular speakers on campus. They are flying out to Los Angeles just a little over a week before the big day to present a unique two-day seminar, "American Politics and the World." They will discuss the horse-race story--who will win and how big?--and the implications for America and the world if President George W. Bush is re-elected or if John Kerry’s challenge is successful. Prof. Lowi will focus on the domestic picture and the changing characteristics of the major parties. Prof. Katzenstein will discuss anti-Americanism abroad and the American Imperium. There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions. "American Politics and the World," to be held Saturday and Sunday, is part of CCLA’s series of professor-led Cornell Adult Education weekends. But this time, for convenience and affordability, the venue isn’t a vacation destination but the heart of town: the Westin Hotel on Century Blvd. a mile east of LAX. Co-sponsors of the event are other Western Cornell clubs. Special room rates will be available for those who wish to stay overnight at the Westin--mention the Cornell weekend. Westin reservations number: (310) 216-5858. The preliminary schedule calls for sign-in and a Continental breakfast from 9-10am, lectures and discussion all morning, a full lunch, then afternoon lectures and discussion, adjourning about 4 pm. The same schedule will be repeated on Sunday. Weekend registration fees, including meals, are: CCLA or other Cornell Club Member $175 ($350 for one member plus one guest); Non-Members $195. Attendees age 30 and under, their 30-or-under guests, and 30-or-under non-members get a discount of $25. Use the form in the newsletter to sign up. We suggest getting your reservations in early, as we expect a full house. Guests and non-Cornellians are welcome as long as space permits. Curtis Reis at (310) 258-9306.

The 2003 recipient of the CALS Alumni Association "Outstanding Faculty Award" is a nationally recognized expert in the field of genetics. He will explain different approaches to cloning, including breakthroughs in treating diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and genetic defects. His informative and thought-provoking approach promises to be accessible to all of us, nonscientists and specialists alike. Time: 7 pm. Location: Home of Peter Pierce, Brentwood. The Cornell Entrepreneur Network (CEN) presents: "LOW-COST SUPERCOMPUTING WITH HIGH-PERFORMANCE CLUSTERS" - What ideas will be funded now that the power of high-performance supercomputing is cost-efficient? How can savvy entrepreneurs harness this technology? Join us and meet Tom Coleman, Director of the Cornell Theory Center. He will highlight how Cornell is advancing supercomputing through high-performance cluster computing and share how you can benefit. Until recently, supercomputing has been limited to experts, mostly due to the cost of traditional mainframes. Now, the Cornell Theory Center has demonstrated, by integrating Dell servers with Intel microprocessors and Microsoft Windows to create distributed parallel clusters, that traditional mainframe supercomputer performance can be replicated for 1/10th the operating and capital expense. With applications ranging from equity portfolio analysis to risk management to online gaming, enterprises requiring high-performance technical computing -- such as high-speed data filtering and computational analysis -- can greatly benefit. The Cornell Theory Center, a computational science support center based at Cornell, received $60 million from Microsoft/Intel/Dell to support developing financial services applications at its lower Manhattan satellite facility. The CTC works with numerous domestic and foreign companies (many in Asia) in the areas of high-performance computing (especially clusters of high-end servers). Applications include computational finance and risk management. The CTC works with a broad spectrum of companies from leading Fortune 500 to 5-person start-ups. June 1 Cornell psychology professor Thomas Gilovich to speak on "Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes and How to Correct Them" - Why do so many otherwise sensible people make foolish financial choices? Fortunately, many of the most common and costly money blunders we make can be explained and corrected by the emerging science of "behavioral economics." Thomas D. Dr. Gilovich is a member of the Cornell Center for Behavioral Economics and Decision Research. A social psychologist, he specializes in the study of everyday judgment and reasoning. He is most widely known for his research debunking the "hot hand" in basketball. 2003 SCHOLARSHIP DINNERS RAISE $13,315--A RECORD! Cornellians contributed $13,315 to the CCLA Scholarship Endowment Fund through the club's 2003 Scholarship Dinner Campaign. The total was a record amount for the long-standing annual series of events. More than 170 club members and guests attended 13 dinners at Cornellians' homes or restaurants during October and November. They contributed from $20 to $150 a plate. Dinner hosts contributed their time and the entire cost of the meals. Some Cornellians contributed to the Endowment without attending a dinner. The total of $13,315 raised thus reflected zero subtractions for expenses, one of the remarkable aspects of the club's volunteer-heavy fund-raising effort, which was led this year by Nancy Mills '64 and Peter Taborr. CCLA is unique among Cornell clubs nationwide in involving its members so fully in scholarship fund-raising. Members who make a point of attending one or more scholarship dinners each year say they enjoy a convivial dining experience and the satisfaction of giving to support needy Cornell students. Make a mental note now to participate in next year's series of dinners! And if you'd like to be a host, please email Nancy or Peter, who are already planning the 2004 dinner schedule.

BEST-SELLING NOVELIST AND CORNELL PROFESSOR ROBERT MORGAN SPEAKS ON "THE VOICE OF THE STORY" - Do you have a Great American Novel that you've been meaning to write? Maybe you have a few well-thumbed "GANs" from your Cornell days on your bookshelf. Do you at least like a good story and a little dessert? Then join us and hear Cornell professor and author Robert Morgan talk about the "voice of the story" as he speaks from and about his international bestseller, Gap Creek. Like his previous works The Hinterlands, The Truest Pleasures, and his most recent This Rock, Gap Creek has received high praise from critics and readers alike. Chosen as one of Oprah's Book Club selections, this novel tells the beautiful story of a young heroine, Julie Harmon, whose inner strength and courage allow her to overcome the harsh life of turn-of-the-century rural Appalachia. Praises for Gap Creek have cited Morgan's poetic literary style and ability to draw strong, dignified, memorable characters within stories that balance simplicity with depth. Robert Morgan, the Kappa Alpha professor of English at Cornell, has published 4 novels and 9 volumes of poetry. He has received enough literary awards to crowd his own Great American Novels off his bookshelf, and has been teaching the craft of storytelling to Cornellians since 1971. Maybe he'll give you the one tip that will finally help you finish your own weighty tome! If you love writing and storytelling (even if you're not the one doing it), this event is not to be missed! Light refreshments (homemade by our own best-selling cookbook author Nancy Mills) will be served.

June 25 NEW WINES, NEW TASTES - FIRST in a series of wine tastings covering countries, grapes and trends. Over the past decade, American cooking has been invigorated by influences from abroad and from within. Flavors from Asia and Mexico and from Native American and Cajun traditions have ratcheted up the spice level of food in general, forcing us to re-think food-wine combinations. Please join us at Cravings on the Strip in a private room with view, where owner Ibrahim Oztok will offer the varied cuisine of the Mediterranean, with forays into Asian and Turkish fusion. Cornell alum Peter Taborr will introduce American and European wines that excite the palate and reexamine assumptions. Taborr is a partner and co-founder of Wine Classics. Its airplane-sized warehouse is based in Chicago. Peter has worked with corporations, non-profits and celebrity chefs. In Chicago he held tastings for the Cornell Club and the Johnson School. This is his first event for CCLA. If restraint proves impossible, wines can be purchased by the case after the event. Book early: the room can comfortably fit just 40. Here's a preview of the foods and wines that'll be sampled: · Grilled artichoke in honey balsamic vinaigrette balanced by a Tenuta Torciano Claresco, a lightly effervescent off-dry Italian sparkling. · Curried chicken with asparagus, pine nuts, and raisins accompanied by a Guttenberg Alsatian-Style Pinot Blanc from Rudolph Geil, Germany. · Landerau Pineau des Charentes, France. A delicious and unusual product (½ cognac, ½ wine) that can be used both as an aperitif (chilled) and after a meal (room temperature) instead of cognac. Time: 7:15 pm

We know you've been meaning to get there all summer, so we've booked your seat on the Catalina Express for you! Cornell is going to Avalon for the day to enjoy the sun, the sand, and the water! The island has lots of fun summer activities to keep you busy: you can go kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, biking, restaurant hopping, shopping, or just grab a seat on the sand and watch the day go by. We've also organized some scuba diving for certified divers interested in beach diving off the famous Casino Point. One of our own Cornellians is a certified dive master and has promised to show us the best dive spots! You'll have your pick of activities and free run of the island all day, and then we'll meet back up for happy hour at 4pm at El Galleon Restaurant & Lounge. This karaoke bar is one of the hippest places on the island, hopping all day long with drink specials from 3-6pm. We have a limited number of seats on the ferry to Avalon, so sign up fast! Information for snorkelers and certified scuba divers: Angel De Sevilla will be leading a guided dive for a limited number of certified divers. If you are interested in signing up for the guided dive, please contact Angel directly to reserve your spot. You will be charged $5 for the guided dive (what a steal!). For divers and snorkelers not interested in the guided dive, Angel will still take you over to Casino Point, describe the terrain, what to look for, and where the best diving/snorkeling is, then send you on your way to explore. Scuba equipment not included.
Depart 8:45am (please arrive at 7:45am for check in) Return from Avalon 8pm (arrive in Long Beach at 9pm)
Location: Catalina Express Terminal at the Queen Mary in Long Beach (there are 2 Catalina Express terminals in Long Beach, so make sure that you go to the one at the Queen Mary, and not at the Landing). Parking: In the Queen Mary parking lot - $8 for the day.
Happy Hour: 4pm El Galleon Restaurant, 411 Crescent (right in downtown Avalon on the strip)
Cost: $40 per CCLA member; $80 for a CCLA member + 1 guest; $45 per person for each additional non-member. Add $5 if you have signed up with Angel for the guided scuba dive. RSVP: By August 16th
Sandra Irlen at (310) 203-0881.

You must contact Angel De Sevilla separately by email to reserve your spot for the guided dive.

Sept 21 DO YOU WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Help Cornell choose the Class of 2007 - Last fall, about 550 LA-area high school seniors applied to Cornell, and this fall the number is likely to increase. Since most applicants never get a chance to visit the campus, it falls to local alumni to contact…and inspire them. Some of you already know the joys and challenges of being a CAAAN (Cornell Admissions Alumni Ambassador Network) volunteer. But most of you may not realize that by donating just a few hours of your time each year you can help several students learn about the joys and challenges of life on the Hill while at the same time providing key information to the University's admissions staff. The University counts on local alumni to be its intermediaries, a role that's particularly important for LA alumni because Ithaca is 3,000 miles away. Associate Provost (Admissions & Enrollment) Doris Davis recently announced that the University's long term recruitment strategy is to interest and enroll more students from key regions in the U.S., which includes California. That means more responsibility for local alumni. This goal is so important, in fact, that the Cornell Alumni Federation has given CCLA a grant to help train CAAAN volunteers. In other words, WE NEED YOU! Come socialize with fellow Cornellians and find out just how easy it is to help Cornell achieve its goal of a bigger West Coast enrollment. Dean of Admissions Angela Griffin will be flying out from Ithaca with the new Dean of Financial Aid Mona Lucas to bring us up to date on what's happening on campus and the latest on financial aid, and to teach us all we need to know in our local recruiting efforts. Current CAAAN volunteers: please attend too! Time: 3 pm - 5 pm
Location: Westin LA Airport Hotel, 5400 W. Century Blvd at (310) 216-5858. Parking: $5 (self-park); $12 (valet).

IF IT WORKED ONCE, LET'S DO IT AGAIN! - Join us for the next Cornellians-in-Hollywood Seminar: Why is Hollywood so in love with franchises, spin-offs and sequels? Top Hollywood producer Jim Jacks, who received his MBA from Cornell, will give us a behind-the-scenes look at why the familiar can be a much better investment than something original. Jacks got his Hollywood start as the executive producer of "Raising Arizona" before spending 5 years as a production executive at Universal Pictures. Ten years ago he teamed up with Sean Daniel to form Alphaville, an independent production company. Since then, they have produced such films as "Dazed and Confused," "Tombstone," "The Jackal," "A Simple Plan," "The Gift," "The Mummy," "The Mummy Returns" and "The Scorpion King." Join Jim and CORNELLIANS IN HOLLYWOOD as we look into the merits of recasting the familiar. Moreover, Co-owner of The Hollywood Canteen is Braxton Pope '94, who is partnered with writers/directors Josh and Jonas Pate in Rockfish Films. The company has a TV production deal with Imagine and is also currently shooting a feature film, "The Take." Pope invites those attending this Cornellians-in-Hollywood event to stay on at the venue to participate in the Angel City Social Club, a regular Tuesday night networking salon for entertainment executives and talent. Date: Time: 7 pm (reception), 7:30 pm (program). Location: The Hollywood Canteen, 1006 N. Seward Street (1 block south of Santa Monica Blvd., 3 blocks east of Highland) Parking: $6 (valet); or on street. Cost: $10 per CCLA member; $20 for a CCLA member and 1 guest; $15 per non-member and additional guests. RSVP: By Sept 17. Your name will be on a list at the door. Nick Muccini

Oct 17 WHAT IS ZINCK'S NIGHT?? Theodore Zinck was a saloon keeper in Ithaca in the 1890's. Zinck's pub, the Hotel Brunswick, was located on North Aurora Street and was a popular gathering place for Cornellians. After Zinck's death in 1903, several bars using his name continued to provide a haven for students. After the last "Zinck's" closed in the mid-60s, celebrating the "Spirit of Zinck's" became a favorite Thursday night tradition. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR YOU?? You get to spend a Thursday night toasting the town with thousands of other Cornellians who will be doing the same thing all around the world!! We expect up to a hundred celebrants in L.A. alone, so don't be among the missing. Time: 8 pm-midnight Where

Nov 7 CEN: WHAT'S HOT? UNIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER - Cattle from cloned embryos, optical tweezers that stretch DNA-protein, "cotton candy" that fights maggots, flower chemicals with toxic warnings. Can tech transfer commercialize all of this research? Jim Severson, Pres. of Cornell Research Foundation (CRF), will reveal the hows and whys of technology transfer and Cornell's role on the forefront of innovation and science. Billions of dollars are being invested at universities in biotechnology, optical switching (MEMS), nanotechnology and other sciences. You'll learn how to work with university tech transfer, what technologies are being developed, and what might happen in the next few years with commercializing university discoveries. Also, find out who's funding, acquiring, and in-licensing early-stage cutting edge technologies, and how these deals are structured. What's it like to be a CRF portfolio company? CRF proudly presents Greg Baxter, CEO of Aegen Biosciences, to discuss Aegen's next generation tools for toxicology, drug discovery and development, genomics, pharmacogenomics and clinical diagnostics. Greg will also explain the exciting new cloning technology at Aegen and possible future uses including cloning cattle. Whether or not you have been to a CEN event, this one is not to be missed.
